BROWNSVILLE, TN (abc24.com) - A Haywood County teacher is off the job after being accused of having sex with a student.

Abby Elizabeth Hooper, 33, was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated statutory rape.

"That's a terrible thing, terrible thing. Can't understand it really," said Victor Boyd, a Brownsville resident. "Gross, really gross."

According to court records, the incident with the married mother of three happened back in October 2012.

"Mrs. Hooper is charged with Aggravated Statutory Rape, resulting from an investigation requested by the Haywood County School Board," said Lt. Chuck Willis, with the Brownsville Police Department.

"It is wrong, it shouldn't happen here," said Corey Norris, a former Haywood County student. "I never thought nothing like this would happen here."

"I remember seeing her at school," said Anissa Jackson, a 12th grader at the school.

"It's sad, she got a son that goes to school there. How would she like if someone did that to her son?" she said.

The school released a brief statement.

"Authorities are conducting an investigation into this matter," the statement read. "The Haywood County Board of Education has suspended the teacher without pay pending its investigation as well."

"The school will defer any further comment until the conclusion of the investigation," the statement concludes.

No one answered the door at Hooper's door in Brownsville.
