MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) — According to AAA, December 21st is one of the busiest travel days of the year. The travel agency reports more than 90 million drivers are hitting the roads. About 5 million of those drivers are from the Mid-South.

"I have a son who's coming from Vegas coming here for the holidays. He's driving,” said Memphian Leroy Howard.

While Howard's son is hitting the road, others are taking it to the skies.

"I'm a little bit worried because I just heard we're going to have some really heavy rain here tomorrow and I'm going to the Midwest, you know there’s snow there so it does kind of worry me,” said Brenda Somes, traveling to Indiana.

AAA reports that more people are traveling this year than in quite some time.

"This is one of the better years we've had since 2006. So we're getting back to what we were prior to our economic problems,” said AAA Memphis spokesperson Cheryl Keating.

Keating says part of the reason why people are traveling more is because of lower gas prices. She says travel is up about 4 percent in Tennessee compared to 2010. So as travelers get ready to head out for the holidays AAA has a warning: pack your patience because it's going to be a busy travel season.
