MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A developer for Overton Square said the public should soon start noticing some major changes in the Midtown neighborhood.

Late last month, the Memphis City Council approved more than $16 million in public funding for parking garage and flood basin. At the same meeting, Ron Kirkpatrick, one of the owners of the vacant French Quarter property on Madison, announced plans to put a hotel and spa on the property.

"Midtown is such a hip place, anything, anything that is abandoned you hate to see," said Barbara Barnett, a stylist at Dabbles Hair Company.

On Friday afternoon, Robert Varner was hard at work in the old Yosemite Sam's on Madison. Varner is renovating the old restaurant and bar, and the outside of the building will be painted early next week.

Matthew Prince with Loeb Properties said he's reviewing renovation schedules, with most of the major work starting this spring.

About time the city starting doing something that's not "downtown".....Why they keep trying to convince folks to go to Beale St. / Downtown is beyond me !
