MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - It is often called one of the most annoying things about living in Memphis, but there soon may be some relief for those pesky check engine lights that often lead to a failed vehicle inspection test.
A Memphis City Council committee is set to debate Tuesday a financial hardship waiver for those who can least afford those costly repairs.
As it stands now, motorists can get a waiver only after spending more than $650 for newer cars. Under the financial hardship waiver, motorists who qualify would only have to go out and get an estimate documenting the repairs would cost that much.
The waiver comes with income guidelines.
A single person would have to earn less than $16,245 to qualify. A family of four could earn up to $33,075 to qualify.
The hardship waiver could only be used once for the life of the vehicle, and the repairs in question must be done by the time the vehicle comes up for inspection the following year.
The Memphis City Council Transportation and Public Works Committee is set to consider the waiver Tuesday morning.
