MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A little girl has died at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis after investigators say the child's mother "snapped."
According to the Tunica County Sheriff's Office, paramedics were called to the Shady Lane Apartments late Sunday, July 8. When they arrived, the 21-month old was unresponsive.
The little girl was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, where she was in ICU for several days until she died. According to court records, the girl was hit repeatedly causing brain trauma.
Police arrested the child's mother, 25-year-old Latoya Ankston, and charged her with felony child abuse; that charge was upgraded to murder upon the child's death.
Police were also questioning Ankston's live-in boyfriend, but as of Tuesday night he had not been charged.
