GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi River has been reopened to limited vessel traffic after crews freed a barge that went aground in low waters caused by an extensive drought.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Tippets says crews Wednesday began guiding 33 vessels waiting to head north and 72 waiting in the southbound queue. He says the Coast Guard will work on lowering the southbound number for the rest of the night.

A safety zone remains in effect from mile marker 535 to 524.

The river was closed early Wednesday after the barge went aground, just hours after an 11-mile section of river had been reopened to some traffic.
