OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI - Bring back the mascot. The grassroots effort to reinstate Colonel Reb, the former mascot of Ole Miss, has the green light to let Mississippi voters decide in 2012. All that's left is to collect the necessary 100,000 signatures.

"Initiative 37 has been officially endorsed and certified by the Mississippi Secretary of State," says Arthur Randallson, director of the Colonel Reb Political Action Committee.

He's the man leading the charge to bring back Colonel Reb, and says he has the power of state law behind him. Now all Arthur Randallson needs is 100,000 voter signatures. 20,000 must come from each of Mississippi's five congressional districts.

"In hand, we have 2,150," says Randallson.

The Colonel Reb Political Action committee has a plan to get the other 97,000 or so. They're setting up booths at Ole Miss's home football games

"Interest is just accelerating now, especially now that football season is on," he tells abc24.com.

Randallson is aiming to collect 1,000 signatures at each home game. The group is even getting political support.

"The Tea Party's endorsed us," says Randallson. "We expect another 20,000 to 25,000 from those people helping out."

But what do the voters think? None of the people we talked with were Ole Miss fans, but all of them said the same thing.

"It's part of the history," says Victoria Fleming. "The mascot should be brought back."

"I have no problems with him coming back," says Chad Carden, "and I'm a Mississippi State fan. When I heard they were going to take him away, I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard."

Will people be willing to sign the petition?

"If they're a true Ole Miss fan, and if they're a Mississippian and believe in history and tradition they would," says Carden.

"I think it's a good idea," says Jennifer Levine. "If they let them do it and they get enough signatures, I think they should bring him back. I would sign it."

By state law, the committee has one year to collect those signatures. Their deadline is the middle of July 2012.

The current Ole Miss mascot is the Rebel Black Bear. That decision was made in 2010. Colonel Reb was removed as the school's official mascot in 2002.

It never ceases to amaze me that people have an opinion about the mascot that know nothing about it...I proudly support the mascot...it stands for honor and love of the Ole Miss Rebels...African American Ole Miss Rebels, Asian Ole Miss Rebels, American Indian Ole Miss Rebels and so on...if you did't go to Ole Miss you don't understand. Once a Rebel always a Rebel no matter what color you are.

With this type of thinking, lets get rid of all southern history because it is racist, no writing books about the past, no pictures taken of the past or no music of the south, because it has racist overtones...you have choices other than Ole Miss to go to school...its not an entitlement...join the military and say this nonsence...

Jefferson Tao wrote: Supporting the "Colonel Reb" mascot is the same as supporting racism and slavery. Speaking as someone who despises bigotry, I respectfully beg to differ. Ole Miss has enjoyed 50 years of substantive progress since 1962. Almost all of the student body came up through an integrated public school system. There are incoming freshman whose PARENTS weren't alive when James Meredith enrolled at the university. Young black men have been elected Colonel Rebel and young black women have been chosen to be Miss Ole Miss. Many of the young men on the football team are celebrated as heroes. They proudly call themselves "Rebels" because that word doesn't mean what it used to mean. The important changes happened a long time ago. As a longtime symbol of the University, many of us see Colonel Reb as representative of those changes for the better. We choose to own, not deny our past. We passionately oppose the bear mascot because it doesn't represent substantive change, it is a marketing creation for the benefit of TV cameras. It implies that the past 50 years of progress never happened.

So if colonel reb is considered racist, then colonel sanders must be too! But I don't see anyone pulling the race card on him! Just plain STUPID! Get a freaking life and protest and spend time on things that are important!

Want to see the rascist? Just look for the one hollaring 'rascist'! They are the first to pull the card and play it when they don't get their handout. here is an example, it is ok for the new black panther punks to threaten white voters, but white people can't fly a flag? Screw that. My great, great grandfather fought under that flag just as I fought under our united flag, and I fly both flags as a patriot. The flag has a lot more meaning than slavery, but that's all a rascist can see in it.
