MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Shelby County Commissioners approved more than $2 million in funding to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office in order to provide resource officers for the unified school system.

Commissioner Sidney Chism told ABC 24 News it was their obligation to provide that funding and keep the kids safe. Chism also said the $2 million figure might vary slightly either way as the consolidated city and county system takes shape.

Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham plans to use the money to hire 35 deputies to replace those he places with the school district.
