MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - He stole her heart and then her money, and now he's in jail.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says Georgia native Ronald Chessman met his Memphis victim on an online dating site. He claimed he was a retired colonel in the Air Force and could invest her money into the military.
After the victim handed over more than $75,000, she asked for some documentation of her investment. When Chessman said he couldn't give it to her, she became suspicious and contacted authorities.
A warrant revealed Chessman never served in any branch of the military. Bank records also show Chessman spent more than $20,000 of the victim's money and took a trip to Jamaica.
Ronald Chessman is charged with two counts each of theft of property and criminal impersonation. He's currently being held on a $300,000 bond.
