MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A new Boys and Girls Club site will have to delay opening its doors after thieves broke in and stole everything of value.
A spokesperson for the organization said that sometime between the evening of Thursday, May 31 and the following Monday morning, all of the HVAC units, copper wiring and fixtures were stolen from the building.
The new Oakhaven Branch was scheduled to open in January 2013, once renovations to the existing property were complete. This setback not only delayed the opening, but also increased estimated renovation costs from $20,000 to $100,000.
“This vandalism is evidence of just how much the community needs a positive place for their kids,” stated Vincent Borello, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis, in a June 4 news release. “The Oakhaven community is home to thousands of kids who could benefit from a Boys & Girls Club. We regret that the vandalism will significantly delay our plans on to open till additional funding can be found. We’re already searching for a community partner who can help us repair the damages and get back on track to open as soon as possible.”
