MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Cordova man got quite a surprise Friday morning when he discovered all four of the tires on his car had been stolen. As it turns out, he wasn't the only victim.
Memphis police say two people had all their tires stolen at an apartment complex in Cordova early Friday morning, April 20. Neighbors say it also happened to a few other people at a nearby apartment complex. Now they're thinking twice before parking their cars at home.
"I got up at 6 [a.m.], my regular routine, headed out the door around 6:45 and came out to see this," said theft victim Ian Vaughn.
All four of Vaughn's tires were stolen in the middle of the night. It happened right outside his window at the Lincoln at Wolfchase apartment complex.
"They were nice enough to put bricks on both sides. It could've been a lot worse; they could've broke in my car."
He's only owned his 2008 Infiniti for 3 months. Now, he can't even drive it.
His neighbor, Robyn Kirkland, told abc24.com, "I'm shocked and it kind of scares me that I can be sleeping 100 feet away and that happens outside my bedroom window."
No one heard a thing. According to police reports, crooks snatched tires from a 2004 Nissan Maxima at this same complex.
MPD says it's not an unusual crime, but in the last 4 months nearly a dozen different crimes have been reported in the same area.
Neighbor Landas Grandberry says he "got a little memo that they put on the apartment doors that said there have been a couple of incidents of people kicking the doors in the apartments."
As for Vaughn, he says once the new tires are on he's "definitely get lock lug nuts. They're cheap and you just have to put one on each wheel and that secures your rim."
The apartment complex manager would not comment on camera as to whether there will be extra security.
