Council Considers One Cent Gas Tax to Fund MATA

Nobody seems to know how this happened, but Memphis has some of the lowest gasoline prices in the country. With that in mind, Memphis City Councilman Ed Ford, Jr. has an idea. He wants to make gasoline more expensive. Just one penny a gallon, he says, that’s all.

Most of the MATA riders have Cadillacs, or Yukons, to get around in anyway. Why should WE pay MORE, for when they have to ride the bus after they have run our their hard-stolen, purse snatchin' money?!?!

If MATA goes away, how will the maids get to their jobs in Germantown & East Memphis?

No new taxes!!! Period. NONE. Raise the MATA prices to fund MATA. Let the people using MATA pay for it.

We don't HAVE to have MATA anymore. Everyone has cars and chauffeurs their brats to school. No one has maids riding the bus to work. Reportage should focus on annual taxpayer subsidy per rider. Got that, Mikey?

I would miss the penny a gallon...and I know a lot of areas in this country that have lower gas prices than Memphis. If MATA were something people really wanted, it wouldn't need "funding".

Sure - I'll agree to this if all of Memphis' city owned vehicles get emissions tested (and don't forget that diagnostic code requirement!) - and if any of them fail Mr. Ford pays for the repairs out of his own pocket....
