Council Considers Requiring College Degree for Memphis Police

In the last four years, 21 cops have been fired by the Memphis Police Department. The reasons for the terminations have never been released, but Memphis City Council members say most of those fired didn't have a college degree. Now council members are considering making the hiring requirements of the Memphis police the toughest in the state.

Must have a college degree? Well now , let's see I am going to spend my time, effort and a lot of money to get my degree and then sign up for the police department in a low paying position with no authority , no respect from the hordes that I would have to deal with and no support from the governing body . Well sorry I have a degree now and I will go and get a higher paying job with better hours, no one shots at me , no one spits on me and the worst injury I could get is a sprained ankle from the company softball game. Any one see any sense in this?

Jack Webb said it best " The problem with the Police is we have to hire from the Human race". You are ging to always have problems, and some are not cut out for this job. But lets not just put all on the police as a whole. The politics have played in some of this also. A few years ago we had a city council woman raise a big stink about not hiring people because of past arrests, and demanding they hire less qualified applicants to meet her quota's. Where is she now? Yes 21 have been fired. How many quit before they were fired? or were found innocent? Goverment's find in the long run it is much cheaper to suspend with pay until they have a hearing on the facts then it would be to have to pay back pay if the person is found not guilty. What would be screeming if you were accused of somthing and fired without due process? Think people this is still the USA "Innocent until proven guilty".

A good start would be to get rid of the "suspended with pay" malarkey.....
