MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis City Council member Janis Fullilove and her husband spent the night in jail after he says she went on a drunken rampage.
Officers were called to the home of Fullilove and her husband, Vernon Chalmers, just after midnight on Tuesday, August 28. When they arrived, Chalmers said he had gone to visit a friend after babysitting their grandchildren and came home to find Fullilove had been drinking.
Chalmers told officers she accused him of cheating on her with another woman and began breaking dishes and throwing them at him, with one dish cutting his arm when she threw it at the fireplace. According to the police affidavit, Chalmers said she "kept running her mouth" so he pushed his wife to the floor and held her down by her legs until police arrived.
As police were escorting Fullilove to a squad car she passed out on the sidewalk, but refused medical attention.
Janis Fullilove and Vernon Chalmers were arrested and each charged with one count of misdemeanor Domestic Assault. They were booked at the Shelby County Jail; Fullilove has since been released and Chalmers remains in jail on a $1,000 bond. Both are due in court August 29.
