MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County has boosted its rewards for tips that can help police bust dog-fighting rings.
At a December 14, 2011 news conference, CrimeStoppers Executive Director Buddy Chapman stated that due to anonymous donations, $10,000 in reward money has been allocated for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in dog-fighting rings or serious animal abuse.
"These donations mean that an individual tipster can receive a $1,000 reward, the largest award paid by CrimeStoppers," Chapman said. "That translates to paying tips in 10 dog-fighting and/or aggravated animal cruelty cases."
Chapman also noted that the majority of dogs at the Memphis Animal Shelter are pit bulls, many of which are believed to have been used in illegal dog fights. Because of the abuse involved with dog fighting, these animals tend to be unsuitable for adoption and are euthanized.
