MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Midwest was rocked Tuesday night and Wednesday morning with severe weather. At least 16 tornadoes touched down from Nebraska to Kentucky. Nine people are dead and more than 100 are hurt.
At least 30 of those injured were in the tourist town of Branson, Missouri, a popular destination for Mid-South vacationers. Many people in Branson are surprised the tornado didn’t take any lives. It hit overnight in a heavily populated area, and parts of the town are barely recognizable.
People are also cleaning up damage in the Illinois town of Harrisburg. At least six people are dead after a twister leveled much of the community.
Nearly half of the town of Harveyville, Kansas was destroyed by another tornado. Kansas' governor declared a state of emergency.
Survey crews are beginning to investigate damage areas in several states. An EF-2 tornado was confirmed in Elizabethtown, Kentucky Wednesday afternoon. Many buildings are damaged there, but no reports of injuries.
