MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Delta Air Lines is cutting flights from Memphis International Airport by 18 percent. The reductions will also affect airports in Nashville, Knoxville and other Southern cities.

The airline stated that those flights being dropped weren't profitable because passenger demand was slack.

Delta will reduce the frequency of flights between Memphis and airports in Nashville; Knoxville; Jackson, Miss.; and Birmingham, Ala., early next year. The carrier will also cease nonstop service from Memphis to Jacksonville, Fla. and Birmingham.

The number of daily departures from Memphis will fall from 115 to 94 on Jan. 3.

Delta has steadily reduced its flights at Memphis since a 2008 merger with Northwest Airlines.
