MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Get out and vote. Memphis Mayor A C Wharton proudly declared Thursday that a new photo ID issued by the Memphis Public Library can be used as a voter ID. But, it turns out that's not true.

Robert Meyers is the Chairman of the Shelby County Election Commission. He says they were listening when Mayor Wharton told Memphians that a photo ID card from the Memphis Public Library can be used to vote.

"We had to go to our Boss, which is the Coordinator of Elections in Nashville, and asked him for his opinion," Meyers said.

Meyers says after speaking with his boss, under the law a municipal ID could not be accepted to vote.

Apparently Mayor Wharton was under the impression it was, stating at a Thursday press conference, "This card satisfies the standards for a voter ID photo… this means a lot to a lot of people."

Meyers says in order to vote you have to have a state or federally issued ID like a driver's license or passport.

AC is a lawyer but too busy to do his own research. For what he budgets for the City Attorney's office, he ought to get more accurate opinions.
