Memphis, TN (abc24.com) - The wife of a fallen Memphis police officer, killed in the line of duty, is taking sides as the city and its police and fire unions continue to battle it out over pay cuts and a pension overhaul.

Betsy Warren said after medical insurance and union dues her husband, Timothy Warren, sometimes brought home $500 a paycheck. Warren was shot and killed while responding to a call at the DoubleTree Hotel the weekend of July 4, 2011.

"He had exactly $500 dollars to make it two weeks, and yet you guys want to take 4.6-percent out of that," Betsy Warren told the city council.

Appearing with her son and daughter, Warren said the last few months have been hard.

"I am doing my best right now to not break down crying, I have been strong up until now. I don't want to lose it right this minute," said Warren.

She said her family is going to counseling, as they deal with their grief.

I do not beleive that junk about having to lay people off to give the paycuts back. I totally believe that is just made up to gain the sympathy of people who believe whatever politicians them. They can give them their money back without layoffs, they certainly would like you to think otherwise so the public will support the cuts. It is the only way to gain the public support. The public wants the police and fire to make a professional wage so that professionals, not a bunch of yahoos, show up to help them in their time of needs.

Basketball players make millions, a tv buffoon makes multi-millions, a drug dealer makes hundreds of thousands - gets a slap on the wrist and keeps the money, but people who shape, form, and protect society get meager pay. Teachers, public servants, police and firemen. Illegals flood into our country and get free housing and food. The very education opportunities that we give them for free slam shut in our citizens faces. WFT. Im in law enforcment and that $500 is VERY VERY F-IN TRUE!!. We still have a converter box on our tv because we have to go a month or two without cable to make it before getting it turned back on. Hotdogs and rice is a week-long dinner at times... yet we dont qualify for any type of aid, but the illegal families get loans to open stores, free housing, jobs, and education opportunities. I think Im going to let my hair grow out, go to mexico, get in the back of a fruit truck, come back into the states and tell everyone my name is Manuel and I want to come to United States... and I dont know english.. and let this country lavish me with free housing, loans to open a business and english lessons. We dont take care of our own, we eat them alive, put them in prison, foreclose on thier houses, cut off thier lights, fire them from thier jobs, and replace them with people that dont even live here. I love this country, but sometimes the abuse is too much. Where is the bailout for the AMERICAN PEOPLE?? I thought about turning to a life of crime, but everyone I thought about robbing was broke. I thought about dealing drugs, but I cant afford to get started. I thought about making meth, but Im afraid of fire and explosions. I thought about selling pills, but I need them to cope with life. I thought about joining the military, but they may not even be getting a paycheck soon. I thought about becoming an NBA superstar, but I cant play basketball and my arthritis acts up. I thought about being rich and carefree.. but Im not an illegal alien. Yeah,I rant..

What happened to the 50,000 dollars the federal Gov't gives families. I don't believe this officer only brought home 500 every two weeks. Check the police pay records and enlighten the public to what is actual. Like some say there are too many chiefs, who do not do police work but get paid way more than patrolmen.

There's a lot of wastage in the city government. Get rid of the poor performers... oh,you can't... unions won't let you. I"m sure a lot of middle management can be eliminated. Police and Fire work 24/7 regardless of the weather. Garbage personnel work weekdays only, don't work in the heat, don't work in the rain, don't work on holidays, and don't work afterhours. And, they certainly don't put their lives at risk every day. There is something seriously wrong when garbage workers make more than our police and fire. Seriously wrong. Garbage workers have minimal responsibilities and their salaries should be commensurate with that.

I am sympathic that pay cut is not what the police and firefighters need right now. If they don't take the pay cut over 400 city employees could lose their jobs. Mayor A.C. Wharton is trying preserve their jobs and we have to understanding the position of the Mayor to act in the best interest of everyone. We do not need anymore lay-offs, seriously!

GEEZ, POLICE & FIRE PROFESSIONS AREN'T THE GREATEST ESPECIALLY IN THESE HARD TIMES, BUT YOU CAN'T CUT THEIR SALARIES. THE BRASS ON TOP NEED THEIR PAY CUT. DEMOTE SOME OF THE CHIEF'S OR START RETIRING PEOPLE EARLY. BRINGING HOME 500.00 EVERY PAY YOU BETTER OFF WORKING FOR A SECURITY FIRM OR AP AGENT AT A RETAIL STORE. ALL I CAN SAY IS NO MATTER WHAT PRESIDENT GETS IN OFFICE, THIS MESS WON'T GO AWAY OVERNIGHT. IT MAY GET BETTER OR IT MAY GET WORSE.

PLEASE DO NOT CUT OUR POLICE AND FIRE PAY. IT IS VERY WRONG FOR A PERSON WHO IS SWORN TO PROTECT AND SERVICE TO BE PAID SO LOW. SHAME ON ALL OF US!

This is so so sad, it breaks my heart. This was a good good man and police officer, who died for nothing. Bless u and your family Mrs. Warren.
