MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A man is dead and a family is mourning after an early morning house fire in south Memphis.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 19 on the 2100-block of Alcy. It took firefighters roughly 20 minutes to put out the flames before they found the body of Arby Miller in a bedroom.
The victim's family claims the woman who was living with their disabled uncle threatened to burn the house down.
The Memphis Fire Department would not comment directly to that claim, but said nothing is being ruled out.
Firefighters say the man was the only one inside the house when the fire broke out.
A neighbor says people were trying to rescue him. "I woke up, I heard a lot of commotion this morning. I come to the door to see some ladies and a lot of children they were beating on the house, they were beating on it and they couldn't get nobody to come out," said neighbor Clarence Boyd.
Firefighters say a passerby called 911. They received a call saying a man was trapped inside the burning house. Even though the victim was the only one inside at the time, three others also lived at the house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
