BARTLETT, TN - On Saturday, May 2, 2009, Thomas Pate was charged with second degree murder in the death of his wife, 26 year-old Micah Pate. Pate was reported missing on Thursday. Her body was discovered Friday night in the Loosahatchie River near Brunswick Road in northeast Shelby County.
Bartlett Police say Thomas Pate led them to his wife's body.

"It's been terrible," says Micah Pate's uncle, Mel Sansom. "Just not knowing was very difficult. Now that we know, we have a long road ahead, just trying to get through it. We are heartbroken and just not sure where to turn. God is providing peace and comfort. Friends have been unbelievable."

Thomas Pate called police Thursday at 10:30 p.m. and said his wife Micah had gone for a run at 8:30 p.m. and hadn't come home. Investigators searched the Pate's Bartlett home Friday afternoon.

Neighbor Tammi Bowen says her daughter watched as detectives talked to Thomas Pate.

"She made the comment to me," says Bowen, "that the husband was standing outside talking to the policeman and he didn't look sad or upset or anything. He just had his hands on his hips looking. She told me he seems suspicious and I feel scared."

Bartlett Police say Thomas Pate told them he accidentally shot his wife.

"We heard he said he accidentally shot her," says Bowen, "but why wouldn't he call 911? That was our thing."

Neighbors and family members say they are glad they know what happened to Micah. And they all say she was one of the nicest people you could meet.

"She would always wave and smile," Tammi Bowen tells myEyewitnessNews.com. "She was always so sweet."

"Very sweet and very helpful," says Stansom. "Always looking for the best in others. Trying to encourage and help in any way she could. She was a great nurse. She was a great daughter, she loved her job and the people she worked with. Her joy for life was contagious."

Micah Pate's family held vigils Saturday night at Harding Academy. They say they haven't made funeral plans yet.

Her husband is in the Bartlett City Jail. No date has been set for his first court appearance.

I'm sure that's what they meant too (body being located) instead of year after agonizing year as so many others go on with not knowing if your loved one is dead or alive, being tortured, held captive and who knows what could be going on. You see it all the time and I can't even imagine the heartbreak of not knowing where they are or if they're still alive. At least now they know, sad as it is.

I remember when people were flat-out accusing people of a certain race were behind her kidnapping/rape/murder... I think that's more sad in terms of the big picture. Are Memphis and the areas that surround it so racist?

No one, friends or family, can really know what went on behind closed doors. That has been proven time and time again. Because he threw here in a ditch like trash instead of phoning 911 it will be difficult to ever believe this was accidential.

I would hope to think that they meant that they were glad to know what happened to her, in light, that she was not abducted, laying hurt somewhere, etc.. I don't think they literally meant that they were glad to know she was murdered. Just a play on words there,or at least, I would hope. I cannot understand how a, supposedly loving husband, could accidently shoot his wife and throw her off in some ditch somewhere. Why would he not have frantically called 911 and reported an accidental shooting?? I read comments on an article before they found her, and all the people on there were saying what a loving husband he was, a great couple to be around, and no problems in their marriage. By that I would think hubby would rush to call 911 to try to save her life. How do you accidently shoot someone you love and throw them in a ditch? I just pray for this family and hope that somewhere, by the grace of God they will feel some peace in knowing that so many people are praying for them and thinking of them, who don't even know them personally. God bless you all.

"Neighbors and family members say they are glad they know what happened to Micah. And they all say she was one of the nicest people you could meet." How can you say that you are "glad" to know what happened to her? I hope this is a mis-quote by the reporter. With it being stated like this, it makes it sound like your glad she was murdered. This just sounds terrible.
