BRICKEYS, Ark. (AP, abc24.com) - Arkansas prison officials say a female guard at the East Arkansas Unit near Brickeys has been stabbed to death by an inmate.
Correction Department spokeswoman Shea Wilson tells The Associated Press that the guard was checking a report that an inmate had an unauthorized pair of shoes in the barracks when she was attacked.
According to Wilson, 47-year-old Barbara Easter was stabbed with a shank and died at a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., about 40 miles away.
Wilson said Sgt. Easter suffered wounds to the side, abdomen and chest.
The inmate involved, later named by prison officials as 30-year-old Latavious Johnson, is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, according to Wilson. He is being moved to a maximum-security prison.
