The term "Cracker" comes from Florida History, it doesn't refer to slave owners. I am from Florida, it's a well known lesson that when Florida was being settled, people would bring cattle into the land. They would crack a specific type of whip that would echo through the trees, it was used for the cattle. It wasn't used for slaves. Floridians are referred to as "Florida Crackers," it's not considered offensive, it's just our history.

I seriously doubt people like jontrey even know what the term "cracker" means, or where it comes from. They literally think that they it refers to a saltine cracker. It's hard for society to move forward when we don't understand the mistakes of our past.

well I still dont find that very offensive...I am sure my ancestors DID own slaves...but that was how things were back then.. I suppose I am a bit more in tune than sme and I realize that my ancestory does not define who I am...now if jontrey and others like himself would have that same realization...and see they were not actually slaves themselves, anymore than we were actually slave owners... perhaps soceity could move forward a bit...

@byebyememphis, actually, when you consider the actual meaning of the term "cracker" it is somewhat offensive. For years I felt the same way that you do about it, and found it to be hilarious. however, once I discovered that the actual meaning inferred that you are someone who cracks the whips, as in a slaver, I soon started to find it offensive.
