MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A former mayor of the tiny municipality of Lakeland is trying to convince fellow residents that the price tag for forming a school district is too high.
The city of 13,000 recently imposed its first property tax, and former mayor Jim Bomprezzi thinks that is just the beginning.
Bomprezzi told The Commercial Appeal he thinks it will cost residents at least $60 million to build the necessary schools.
Lakeland is one of six Shelby County municipalities that will hold referendums on Aug. 2 on whether to form their own systems. Supporters of the separate systems hope to avoid becoming part of the unified Memphis and Shelby County system that is being formed.
The Shelby County Commission has filed a motion in federal court to block the suburban votes.
