MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Bill Courtney, the former Manassas Head Football coach featured in the film "Undefeated," was at the 84th annual Academy Awards and struggling to take it all in as the winner for Best Documentary feature was being announced.
Courtney told abc24.com, "I'm deaf in my right ear so when they read the winner I couldn't hear it."
So when they did announce that "Undefeated," the film about the 2009 Manassas High football team he coached, won an Oscar, he had to look to his right but quickly learned the outcome.
"My wife was covering her face and the guy next to her was jumping up and down I said heck I guess we just won."
Courtney said not only did the producers and directors of "Undefeated" win, the City of Memphis won too.
"It says Memphis with all its divides and all of its past we can come together and do great things if we put aside preconceived notions and go to work with each other."
"Undefeated" premieres in Memphis, Friday, March 2nd at the Malco Paradiso.
