MILLINGTON, TN (abc24.com) - Family and friends said farewell to the Millington Central High School football player who died during practice last week.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Dana Payne at First Baptist Church in Millington. The 15-year-old was buried at the Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery.

The sophomore student died on August 21 after a hard tackle at football practice. According to the police report, Payne was tackled by a single player and took a hit to the middle of his body. The coach noticed Payne didn't get up, remained in the kneeling position, and was struggling to breathe. The report says Payne had asthma but had not complained about it before or during practice.

There is a fund set up in Payne's honor. You can donate to the Dana Payne Fund at any First Tennessee Bank or First South Credit Union.

Yes, it is. Dana was a great kid. And his Trojan family misses him very much. So keep your comments to yourself if the only thing you have to say about such a loss is whether or not it's a peace sign he's throwing up. Get a life. Please and thank you. Ashli Martin Millington HS C/O 2013

No, not a gang member. Seemed like a great kid. Did well in school, played sports, knew how to swim, has a great smile, wears a hat the way you're supposed to. Nope, that's no gang memner.

Was he a gang member? He is flashing a sign. I'm just asking honestly.
