GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - The Shelby County city of Germantown has approved a ballot issue that will let voters choose whether to have a municipal school system.

By a unanimous vote of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Monday, the matter will go to a referendum on May 10, according to The Commercial Appeal.

If Germantown and other Memphis satellite cities choose to run their own education systems, they would opt out of the Memphis and Shelby County school systems, which are in the process of combining.

After the Germantown vote Monday, Mayor Sharon Goldsworthy called it "one of those somewhat historic moments."

The aldermen also adopted a half-cent sales tax hike to help fund local schools.
