MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A groundbreaking was held April 20 for a new project aimed at redeveloping the north Memphis neighborhood known as New Chicago.

The Leath Street initiative will create new affordable housing in the area. Once built, the homes will be offered for sale for about $70,000.

The New Chicago Community Development Corporation says currently, quality affordable housing isn't as available as it once was. The group hopes the project will bring in new residents and make the neighborhood a desirable place to live.

"We may be distressed, but we are not defeated," said Mayor A C Wharton. "That's what this is about. We're not going to give up. We're going to reclaim Memphis one community at a time."

Eddie Hayes, III with the New Chicago CDC added, "It's a sign of hope. What we need is young families, new families, people who choose to live here and not feel like they have no choice but to live here. This is hope. This is a beginning for this neighborhood, and for young families to come."

Mayor A C Wharton also says the police presence will increase in the area to keep the community safe.

The project is paid for by a grant. It's expected to be completed by early next year.
