MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A local organization is calling Memphis police officers out of control. The group wants the federal government to investigate the Memphis Police Department for violating people's civil rights.

The Memphis Black Autonomy Federation cites six incidents this year where the group says Memphis police officers used excessive force that resulted in the deaths of six people of color.

Jonina Ervin and her husband, Lorenzo Ervin, have a real distrust of the police. The Ervins are with the Memphis Black Autonomy Federation, a group they say is for social justice.

The group wants police officers held accountable for what they say were the unnecessary deaths of six people this year, which include 38-year-old Dewayne Bailey, who was shot and killed by police June 4th after they say he dragged a police officer and rammed two squad cars.

Also, 19-year-old Christian Freeman, who was shot by police June 12th near Fourth and Beale after they say he lunged at them with a knife.

"They knew [Freeman] had mental problems," Jonina said, "Memphis police should have specially trained force of over 200 officers who know how to deal with people who have mental health problems."

"If you shoot someone, whether you wear a badge or whatever, you don't have the absolute right to kill somebody. They're not James Bond," added lorenzo.

So far the Memphis Police Department has not issued abc24.com a response to these allegations.

Dang, JUSTICE4DLB, stopped yelling at me. I'm sure there are specific instances where the police are wrong, but if you want to point the racism finger at someone, don't just point it at the police. Facts aren't racist, they are just facts. Like the fact that over 90% of the crime in Memphis is committed by black people.

" justice4blb " are you saying that the police simply pulled up along gunned him down for no reason ? if so that is horrible. i honestly do not recall the story ( i will research ). but i do think that 4 white cops running around memphis ( of all places - 80 percent black ) kill black folk for absolutely no reason would have drawn a little more attention than this story got.

WELL FIRST DEWAYNE BAILEY WAS NOT FROM MEMPHIS.. HE WAS A FATHER A SOON TO BE HUSBAND... HE WAS A HARDWORKING YOUNG MAN WITH NO PRIORS.. SO WHAT HE SLEEP IN THE CAR WHERE THE MANAGER OF THE STORE KNEW HIM PERSONALLY AND WHERE DEWAYNE FELT SAFE AT. DEWAYNE DIDNT KNOW ALOT ABOUT MEMPHIS OTHER THAN HIS SOON TO BE MOTHER IN LAW HOME, HIS JOB, THAT STORE ON THIRD AT HORN LAKE AND WHERE HE AND HIS FIANCEE RESIDED.. SO BEFORE YOU ALL JUDGE GET THE FACTS AND KNOW THE BACKGROUND. YES IT WAS 4 WHITE POLICE OFFICERS WHO SHOT 32 TIME AND KILLED HIM. THE POLICE OFFICERS HAVE PRIORS MEANING THEY ARE TRIGGER HAPPY AND HAVE SHOT AND KILLED OTHER PEOPLE. OFFICERS HAVE STEPS THEY TAKE BEFORE DRAWING AND USING THERE WEAPON. SO KNOW THEY FACTS

When most MPD officers are black, the racism card doesn't work very well. This group needs to focus on educating the black community to hit this problem at the source.

are these people so stupid as to think that a cop would NOT shoot a white person if they lunged at a cop with a knife ? typical race baiting b.s. ( again ) dang this is getting so old..... one other thing - were all of the cops white that killed these black men ? or were they just uncle toms ? here is a little advice for the IDIOTS the police keep killing - police are not trained to " shot to disable " they are trained to stop the threat which means to " aim " for the biggest center of mass which on a human being that center of mass is the chest area and in case you stupid a$$ thugs did not pay attention in school.... that is where all of you vital organs are. ( those are the things that help keep you alive and they do not mix well with bullets ). so the best advice is to not get into situations where a police officer or anyone for that matter, would need to point a gun at you.

Whine, whine, whine, whine, whine. It's always somebody else's fault. It's the police, it's the white people. It's NEVER your own fault. Get a job, quit being lazy and act like you have good sense and you won't have to worry about getting shot, except by the little wanna be thugletts on the street. And they're mostly black. But it's everybody else's fault. And I DO have the absolute right to use deadly force in certain situations. I've had enough schooling to know when that is.

Think of the chaos that we are fortunate enough to avoid because of police, fire & medical heroes. If U have never been overseas, U would be appalled at the 'real' social injustice Americans are sheltered from by people that have chosen these life protection careers.
