MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - It was back to business at the FedEx hub after an early Thursday morning HAZMAT scare.

The building was evacuated and two workers were sent to the hospital after a chemical used in pepper spray was released into the air.

Hazmat teams were called to building around 2 a.m. on Thursday, August 16. The fire department says a drum holding the chemicals was damaged by a forklift.

First responders set up a decontamination process to ensure workers were safe.

"This does not happen very often at all, this is very rare for us," stated FedEx spokesperson Chris Stanley. "We do have safety specialists on site; they're ready to clean up, they're ready to do anything that happens after an incident happens, but it's very rare for us to have an incident like this."

The workers taken to the hospital are expected to be ok. The chemical is dangerous, but not fatal, even in large amounts.
