MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Lieutenant Wilton Cleveland with the Memphis Police Department sex crimes unit has simple, but firm instructions for parents of trick or treaters.

"Map the location of the sex offenders," he says. "We would prefer children avoid residences where sex offenders are."

On Halloween, those offenders could be anywhere.

"They could be walking around as if they're trick or treating with their own children," Lt. Cleveland tells abc24.com, "which they may not be doing."

Cleveland says if sex offenders are out and about on Halloween there are things they cannot do.

"Sex offenders cannot dress up as any fictional character or real character and knowingly be around children," he says. "They know what their restrictions are. The key to parents ensuring their kids' safety is checking the sex offender registry website and making sure they steer clear of where sex offenders live."

I wonder if there's any statistics regarding SEX OFFENDERS stealing away children on Halloween... I love the myths these types of articles continue to perpetuate: 1. All SEX OFFENDERS' crimes were against children, apparently even pre-teen trick-or-treaters. 2. All SEX OFFENDERS go after children they don't even know; they snatch them right off the street in front of your eyes. 3. Your neighbor, if a SEX OFFENDER, is a VERY VERY bad person, whom you should avoid AT ALL COSTS because they have no redeeming character whatsoever... they are VERY VERY BAD... STAY AWAY.. In fact, maybe you should burn their house down, or at the very least, don't let your child play with their child. 4. Don't worry about anyone who may offer your child drugs, or beat your child up, or steal from your child, or just plain murder your child for the fun of it We do not track them, and we don't need to warn you about them. They never re-offend. 5. Also, don't worry about anyone who has been convicted of drunk driving. You do not need to be aware of them in your neighborhood. They would never come cruising through, drunk, and endanger your child. And, they would NEVER re-offend, and they wouldn't DARE drive with a revoked license, so we don't need to TRACK them and let you know where they live. Just watch out for those very special SEX OFFENDERS. P.S. And NEVER EVER EVER hire them as an employee. Their family can starve; good riddance. P.S.S. Again, I repeat, they are VERY VERY BAD and they ALL RE-OFFEND, and they are ALL after YOUR CHILD!!! "Happy" Halloween everyone! (Now go get your torches and pitchforks.)
