MPD Warns Parents To Watch For Sex Offenders on Halloween
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Lieutenant Wilton Cleveland with the Memphis Police Department sex crimes unit has simple, but firm instructions for parents of trick or treaters.
"Map the location of the sex offenders," he says. "We would prefer children avoid residences where sex offenders are."
On Halloween, those offenders could be anywhere.
"They could be walking around as if they're trick or treating with their own children," Lt. Cleveland tells abc24.com, "which they may not be doing."
Cleveland says if sex offenders are out and about on Halloween there are things they cannot do.
"Sex offenders cannot dress up as any fictional character or real character and knowingly be around children," he says. "They know what their restrictions are. The key to parents ensuring their kids' safety is checking the sex offender registry website and making sure they steer clear of where sex offenders live."
