MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The Mid-South Jewish community is working to promote unity across all religious faiths after a Torah belonging to a local Hebrew academy was damaged last month.

Police say 24-year-old Justin Baker damaged the Torah and other religious items while students of Margolin Hebrew Academy were at a retreat at the Doubletree Hotel in Jackson, Tennessee.

Baker worked as an overnight security guard at that hotel and is now charged with felony vandalism.

The Hebrew academy is working to promote religious tolerance and understanding by hosting a community event Monday night at the Baron Hirsch Congregation on Yates Road. It starts at 7 p.m., and is open to the public.
