HERNANDO, MS (abc24.com)- How much can $200,000 buy?

In Hernando, about 15 roads worth of asphalt. The Mississippi town is ready to roll out its pavers, and residents are looking forward to getting rid of their rocky roads.

Hernando's mayor says the city doesn't have much money to spend, but they're trying to stretch taxpayer dollars to make as many roads better as possible.

Mary Wiggins lives in one of Hernando's subdivisions whose streets will soon be getting a makeover. She's watched them deteriorate over the last decade.

"As you can see it does need some repair work," she says.

"There's just a whole range of them spread all over the city," says Mayor Chip Johnson.

The town's budgeted $200,000 to repave about 15 streets.

"$200,000 doesn't go far at all. We wont get a lot of roads paved with that, but we will get the worst ones overlayed," Johnson says.

He says they choose the roads carefully to avoid controversy.

"We give the engineer the amount of money we have to spend and he ranks the roads from worst to best," he tells abc24.com. "We start with the worst road and go down the list until we run out of money."

The city's just bidding out the project. Work won't start for a few more months.
