HERNANDO, MS (abc24.com) - Big things are happening for a small town restaurant in Hernando, Mississippi. Next month the Memphis Street Cafe will be featured on the Food Network.
Customers got it on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." They liked the cooking, wrote the Food Network and this August you can watch the cafe's chefs on national TV.
"I don't know who did it, but they said people have been writing in, emailing them about us," says chef and owner Chris Lee.
Those reviews worked their magic. Lee just finished cooking with show host Guy Fieri. "I did a dessert," he says.
It's a special recipe to be revealed in August, but Lee tells us, "It's a banana bread made with pecans instead of walnuts. We make that from scratch then cook it like French toast and top that with bananas foster, then top that with a homemade vanilla bean and ginger ice cream."
His restaurant is already a hit in Hernando, but as to where the cafe fits on the show's title list, "We're not necessarily a diner," Lee laughs. "We're not a drive-in. We are in the basement of a hundred year old building. I guess that could be considered a dive. I'm taking that as a compliment."
"I think it's more so a local little underground spot," says customer Maurice McMillan. "Just a good friendly local place."
It's also a place with chefs who are grateful for the local support.
"It's a smaller city, but the caliber of people who live here is high," agrees Lee.
The Lees are opening up another place in town this fall. They just signed the lease on a butcher shop and fresh seafood market.
You can watch their show air on the Food Network August 6th at 9 p.m.
