MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Thanksgiving is hours away and the busiest travel day of the year is here. AAA estimates more than three million Americans will take to the sky this Thanksgiving.
The hustle and bustle of holiday travel was in full effect at Memphis International Airport. The wise scheduled early flights.
“I'll be home in bed by the time the real confusion starts,” Jorge Figueioras said.
The Transportation Security Agency came up with
a smart phone app that monitors security check lines and the time it takes to get through them, and that's not all.
“In about 35 airports around the country, TSA's pre check program rolled out that allows people to go through a pre-screening initiative, that allows them expedited passing through the checkpoint. Airlines allowed passengers to avoid baggage counters by letting them tag and check their luggage,” said Kevin McCarthy with TSA.
The streamlined flight process is designed to get travelers on planes more quickly and off to their destinations.
“I'm headed to Philadelphia. I showed up forgetting this was the biggest travel day of the year and my flight leaves in about 55 minutes so I hope I make it on time,” Renee Korner said.
If you don't, it'll cost you. Angel Dominguez learned that first hand. His wife missed the flight for her daughter's wedding last night thanks to a minor car accident. She flew out this morning.
“I initially paid 250 dollars for the ticket, it ended up costing me 900 dollars to send my wife home to the wedding,” Dominguez said.
A small price to pay to be home for the holiday.
