Oxford, MS (abc24.com) – Initiative 26, a proposed amendment to the Mississippi Constitution, would make abortion illegal in the state.

The purpose of the amendment is to define the word "person" or "persons" to include every human being from the moment of fertilization or cloning. Opponents say it's unconstitutional.

"Medical privacy for women and bodily autonomy are extremely important and critical, they're a basic consideration of human freedom," Forrest Jenkins with the Lafayette County Women for Progress told abc24.com.

"It’s a war on women, especially a war on the reproductive rights of women," said Ann Phillippi.

Allison Wells, a senior at Ole Miss told abc24.com she supports Initiative 26.

"It is not outlawing birth control, it is not getting women's rights taken away from them," said Wells.

Mississippi voters will make a decision on Initiative 26 when they head to the polls November 8, 2011.

Amen Bobby. I'm pretty sure that history could shed some light on this too. despite the law, abortions are going to happen. No law can force a woman, or girl to want to be a parent. Anyone ever read Ciderhouse Rules? If this passes, MS is going to have an influx of dumpster babies.

Allison Wells needs some more education. No, by itself, the only thing 26 does is redefine the word "person" in the Mississippi constitution. Leaving the details up to the courts and legislature. The main thing is that a fertilized egg - not even implanted in the uterus yet, before a woman is actually pregnant - will have the same rights and 'life' as any other person. So, Hormonal Birth Control - "The Pill" - which is viewed by many as having a tertiary (third stage) effect of preventing a fertilized egg from implanting to begin pregnancy, will be, most likely, outlawed because it would 'kill' the fertilized egg. Other things it could cause - depending on a court's judgments - Outlaw IUDs, Outlaw morning after pills, put an effective end to In-Vitro fertilization in Mississippi, require all miscarriages to be investigated for negligence or intentional causation - because that could be a murder. for more, read http://goo.gl/JVQyj
