MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A 24-year-old mother from Olive Branch, Miss. is behind a Ku Klux Klan permit filed last week with the City of Memphis.
The permit for the March 30th rally, obtained by abc24.com on Tuesday evening, was filed by Tamra Crowder on February 14th.
The KKK announced plans for the rally shortly after the City Council voted earlier this month to change the names of three parks, including Nathan Bedford Forrest Park. Forrest was the first Grand Wizard of the KKK and a Confederate general in the Civil War.
After the vote, a Mid-South KKK member said the rally would attract "thousands," but in the permit filed with the city, the group estimates 180 members will show up.
Reached by phone on Tuesday evening, the 24-year-old mother expressed shock that the permit was made public. Later in the phone conversation she said she filed the permit, paying $28 in cash for it.
The permit's disclosure comes as Memphis Police Director held his first face-to-face meeting with KKK members. City Officials confirmed the meeting Tuesday night, with a KKK member telling abc24.com the meeting occurred on a city street. According to the KKK member, the meeting did not go well.
That same member said Crowder was in hiding Tuesday night, upset about the disclosure and summoned to headquarters by the KKK's Grand Wizard.
