MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Light, Gas, and Water will again be reaching out to senior adults and physically-challenged individuals this winter. The Winter Moratorium for Seniors program will aim to help qualified participants stay warm during the winter even if they can’t pay their utility bills. The program will protect customers from having utilities disconnected during the winter due to unpaid bills.

There are no income restrictions for the Winter Moratorium program, but applicants must pay outstanding balances on their bill before November 30, 2012. Participants who qualify are still required to pay their bills during December, January, and February, but in the event the customer cannot pay in full, this program protects against disconnection.

To qualify, the participant must have utilities listed in the name of the elderly and/or handicapped person who is applying. Also, you must prove you are either over the age of 60 or that you have a disability.

Applications are available at the Aging Commission, Meritan, MIFA, MLGW Community Offices, or by calling 544-MLGW.
