MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - An underground MLGW transformer exploded Tuesday afternoon in the medical district, knocking two pedestrians off their feet and sending them to the hospital.

The explosion happened just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17 near the Shelby County Health Department on Jefferson Avenue. The building was briefly evacuated as MLGW crews and the Memphis Fire Department assessed the scene.

Two pedestrians were reportedly knocked to the ground when the explosion occurred, and were taken to The MED in non-critical condition. A 55-year-old woman had abrasions on her knees and legs, and a 47-year-old man had no visible injuries but was transported as a precaution.

No other injuries have been reported.

According to Glen Thomas with MLGW, there were no power outages as a result of the explosion.
