DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - When the 3rd installment of the Mid-South Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championships gets underway on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at the DeSoto Civic Center, a unique cast of personalities will enter the cage to compete.

One of them, Derek Lehmann, is a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army who has seen 4 years worth of active combat duty.

"I served 4 years total during 4 separate deployments. 15 months and then 12 months in Iraq and then 15 months and 12 months in Afghanistan," Lehmann told abc24.com.

Lehmann said that while military training and MMA training are very different, his experience in combat helps him compete in the cage.

"After being over there, in real, life-or-death situations, getting in the cage is easy," he said. "Some people are afraid to get in the cage and fight, but after my service in the Army, I have no fear."

Another competitor whose job inadvertently trained him to not be afraid to fight is Memphis police officer Brian "The Law" Hall. Hall's professional debut has been long-awaited by those who follow the sport. He spent 4 years as an amateur competitor before getting permission to turn pro.

"The MPD approved my request for secondary employment, so now I can fight professionally," a visibly happy Hall said.

Jacob Noe

Two home-grown Mid-Southerners are also on the card.

Memphian and current light-heavyweight champion Jacob Noe told abc24.com that growing up in Memphis gave him the tools he needs to compete, along with a sense of pride in what he does.

"I grew up always getting in trouble for fighting, for sticking up for other kids against bullies," Noe said. "My family is a lot happier now that I'm not getting in trouble for fighting, now that it's my job. It's also my job to make sure this championship belt stays in my hometown."

Cody Shuffield is a student at Ole Miss and the son of a former professional kickboxer. Shuffield and his father Steve talked to abc24.com about the family legacy in combat sports, and how mom and dad deal with the anxiety of watching their son compete.

"I grew up behind 4 generations of combat sports competitors, so this just came natural for me," Cody Shuffield said.

"It's difficult to watch, but I'm confident in his abilities," Steve Shuffield told abc24.com. "His mom trusts me to not put him in situations he's not ready for."

About the school he attends, Cody added, "I hope they get the football program fixed. It's a lot more fun on campus when they're winning games."

"And it's better for the community," his dad chimed-in.

Austin Lyons

Then there's Austin Lyons, a 23-year-old lightweight fighter who seems to have the weight of the hopes of the Mid-South MMA community riding on his shoulders.

Bryan Young, the promoter of Mid-South MMA Championships, introduced Lyons by saying, "when our matchmaker (Jamie Houston) said we could get Austin Lyons for an October card, I said let's do it."

Another lightweight fighter, Jimmy White, said, "One day, I hope to show guys like Austin Lyons just how good I really am."

So how does Lyons deal with the pressure?

"I don't even think about it," he told abc24.com. "The pressure will fold you up, break you, if you let it. I just look at this like another hard training session."

Lyons, along with the promoters, matchmakers and other prominent Memphis-area MMA personalities, expects a win on Saturday night to push his career to the next level, into a major, national MMA organization.
