MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Speeders watch out, Memphis Police are cracking down. Memphis police are putting more officers on the interstate hoping to catch drivers with lead feet.
Not only do most drivers comfortably travel at least 10 miles over the speed limit on I-240, Memphian Mark Butterfield says motorists who try to follow the law are afraid to. "I think it's not that safe," Butterfield says, "You tend to get run over pretty quick."
Shelly Butterfield hasn't noticed extra cops on the road but wishes she did. "I was surprised they weren't patrolling it before, since it's a construction zone and it just feels so dangerous the lanes are really cramped, they need to be out there, it's dangerous."
Police say the increased number of cars on I-55, I-40 and I-240 coupled with complaints about reckless drivers is causing them to step up patrol. Shelley Monany says, "I think it's a great idea, we've had some fatalities out there that have been really sad, so it's good they're looking into that."
Mark Butterfield says extra patrols are a good idea. "If you feel you're doing the speed limit and you're about to get run over, more patrolling would be a good thing."
Since speeding is often a contributing factor in fatal crashes or serious injuries, MPD hopes increased enforcement will save lives.
