MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Memphis Police officer was in federal custody on Thursday, October 27, 2011, one of 25 people facing charges as part of a massive drug ring.
35-year-old Eric Johnson was arrested Thursday morning at the Mt. Moriah police station according to Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong.
According to federal prosecutors, Johnson and the other suspects "conspired to distribute at least 1,000 kilograms of marijuana."
"The investigation is ongoing and it is an operation that actually has nationwide implications so I will leave it at that," says Edward Stanton Jr., United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.
Armstrong says Officer Johnson joined the MPD in February 2006 and is a patrolman.
"It is disheartening to me as director of police services," Armstrong tells abc24.com, "to find out one of our own officers is involved in this investigation and has been indicted."
