SENATOBIA, MS (abc24.com) - Three Mississippi teens jailed for three days, forced to strip naked and searched, all for walking through a neighbor's yard in Senatobia.

The 15 year olds accused of trespassing have been cleared of all charges, but said the experience is something they'll never forget. Neither will their parents.

The teenagers had no previous trouble with the law, but they were taken into custody in July, 2011 after a neighbor called police after they walked through her yard.

Leigh Ann Darby is the youth court judge in Tate County. Lawyers said directly after the teens' arrest, she ordered the three drug tested and had them taken to a juvenile detention center two hours away in Alcorn County.

They weren't given a hearing and were forced to strip then squat and cough for guards. All three were tried and cleared of the charges in the middle of October 2011. Lawyers said something is wrong with the way Mississippi handles child cases.

They accuse Darby of abusing her power. She was suspended for 60 days but will return to work next week, something the teens, their families and attorneys don't want to see.

"We have real concerns about the fact that Ms. Darby is going to be returned to the bench on November 1st," attorney Cliff Johnson told abc24.com. "We also think it's a problem that the Alcorn Detention Center has a policy of strip searching every child regardless of their age and charges against them. We want people to know what's happening and ask their political leaders hard questions about the juvenile justice system and oversight of the system. We think changes need to be made."

The attorney told abc24.com these cases are often kept private because they involve underage kids. The three are sharing their story because they worry others may have gone through the same thing.

No reason was given for Judge Darby's suspension. She rules over the Tate County youth and drug courts. It's not an elected position. On October 3, 2011, the board of supervisors voted to remove her from office. So far no action has been taken.

Should this be news to anyone that has lived in the Senatobia area? This has been happening for a long while. I have 1st hand experience with the court and Ms.Darby. I have had alot of bad experiences with the law in that town as so many have, but to report it, only means that you and your family will be harressed from that point on. Thank God that this is finally getting the attention of the nation and now maybe we can correct this situation and teach our children to again respect the law instead of fearing them.

Times have changed. You can't walk through people's yards like you could a long time ago. Teens, adults now a days throw their trash onto your property as they are passing through or being nosey and seeing what you have of any value. This is why homeowners are putting up fence's around their properties along with NO TRESPASSING signs. You have to respect people's property, Most of us don't have much, but what little we do have we'd like to keep it. Burglaries, Home Invasions, etc.. Just use common sense to avoid being arrested or being SHOT by the homeowner don't TRESPASS on other people's PROPERTY !!!

Leigh Ann Darby is a moron. Plain and simple. She has a horrible disposition and shouldn't be allowed to practice law in any shape, form, or fashion. Karma finally caught up with her. As for the teens, GOOD FOR YOU for standing up for yourself! You were found Not Guilty and shouldn't have been treated like murderers for simply walking across a yard. Now get rid of Darby.

This is just wrong! That judge needs some common sense. Those poor kids.... I'm so proud of them for standing up and telling about their ordeal so other teens won't have to go through this. Strip searched for trespassing?!?!? Had they done that to my son..... heads would roll!!! And what kind of neighbor calls the police for kids walking through their yard??? Unless they were vandalizing the property or hurting pets or something... But just walking by? Maybe I'm old, but I remember the days when yards weren't bound by fences and the neighborhood kids roamed free without having to worry about angering a neighbor.

Being a resident of Mississippi for 65+ years, it is certainly no suprise there are no comments on this story. Let's all just be quiet and pretend it never happened. As Mississipians we are good at keeping quiet when things like this happen to certain people. I know this to be true from experience.
