MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Malco Theatres, which operates 30 movie theaters across the Mid-South, is reviewing its security measures in light of a mass shooting at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado.
Authorities say 24-year-old James Holmes burst into the theatre at Aurora's Century 16 Movie Theaters, set off a smoke bomb and began randomly firing at movie-goers with up to four firearms, killing at least 12 people and injuring as many as 50, including members of the U.S. military.
The mass shooting prompted Stephen Lightman, CEO of Malco Theatres, to issue the following statement:
We are shocked and saddened to learn of the horrific event at the Century Theatre in Colorado and express our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. The film industry is a close-knit community and this tragedy effects us all. Security has always been of major importance to Malco Theatres and we will continue to maintain a strong security presence in all of our locations.
