CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Clarksville police have arrested a man who had a 2-year-old child with him inside an apartment building during an hours-long standoff with police, but no one was injured.

Police spokesman Jim Knoll said in a news release that 30-year-old Karl Brandom Banks was charged with domestic assault and taken into custody around 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

When police arrived at the apartment around 1:42 a.m., a 30-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter got out of the building, but the younger child was still inside with Banks. Knoll said the police tried to make contact with Banks but he would not respond. Around 5 a.m., police were able to remove the child.

Knoll said police used a chemical irritant and a distraction device to remove Banks from the building without harm.
