SHELBY COUNTY, TN (abc24.com) - A senior citizen died shortly after trying to rescue a neighbor from a house fire Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 29 on the 4800-block of Walden Glen just north of Memphis in unincorporated Shelby County. As Shelby County, Millington and Memphis firefighters arrived on the scene, a neighbor was retreating from the home where he had tried to break in the front door to find the homeowner. The neighbor, a 69-year-old man, then collapsed on the sidewalk and went into full cardiac arrest. He was transported to Methodist North where he died a short time later.

The homeowner, a 57-year-old woman, was also transported to Methodist North in non-critical condition for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
