MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - One man is dead after a fire ripped through an East Memphis apartment building.
The fire happened on January 9, 2012 around 4:00am at the Butterfield Village Apartments near Park Avenue and I-240.
The fire was contained to one building, damaging 8 apartments.
Firefighters said smoke was pouring out of the building when they arrived. They haven't released where exactly the fire started, but neighbors believe it started in an apartment on the ground floor.
One couple said they were asleep in their beds when they were awakened by a neighbor running through the building banging on doors, sounding the alarm about the fire.
Firefighters got the fire under control in less than 15 minutes, but found a body once they got inside the building. Police have not released the name of the man found dead, but confirmed his body was found inside a bedroom in one of the apartments.
According to Memphis Fire Lt. Wayne Cooke, "During our primary search procedures, we located the body of an approximately 50-60 year old male in the bedroom area."
Cook said they're withholding the victim's name pending the report from the Medical Examiner's office.
