MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) – Memphis Mayor A C Wharton says he wants to make sure improvements along Madison Avenue in Midtown doesn’t stop with the recently added bike lanes.

According to the mayor’s office, Wharton plans to convene a steering committee before the end of the year for continued development of the area. Through a federal grant, Wharton pushed through the addition of bike lanes on Madison from McNeil to Cooper in October 2011, despite mixed responses from many of the affected business owners.

“I sought consensus before making any decisions about Madison Avenue, but we were unable to reach any agreement,” said Mayor Wharton. “Now that the bike lanes are a reality, it is imperative we all pull together to make Madison the most attractive avenue it can be.”

Additionally, Wharton has called for the city’s Engineering Division to begin traffic monitoring along the newly paved portions of Madison.
