MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The mayor of Memphis wants more cops on the streets, and fast.
On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, Mayor A C Wharton told a Memphis City Council sub-committee that he wants to restart the Memphis Police Academy.
"We are going to be opening up those classes," Mayor Wharton said.
Police recruiting was put on ice last summer as the city faced a budget crunch.
"We held back on two classes, we are going to be going forward with that," said Wharton. "We intend to have them on the street by July 1."
