MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The mayor of Memphis wants more cops on the streets, and fast.

On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, Mayor A C Wharton told a Memphis City Council sub-committee that he wants to restart the Memphis Police Academy.

"We are going to be opening up those classes," Mayor Wharton said.

Police recruiting was put on ice last summer as the city faced a budget crunch.

"We held back on two classes, we are going to be going forward with that," said Wharton. "We intend to have them on the street by July 1."

I left the SCSO right after Jack set an example that a lot of others need to follow. Both the SCSO and the MPD were rife with criminal behavior then and as we see weekly in the news chock full of criminals now. Maybe we need to double the concealed carry permits and half the police force, reducing crime and corruption overnight.

Remember when the city council thought they knew better and and resources take over the hiring process?? Remember when they said that we can get qualified (with lower standards) from within the city limits?? They need to leave the ones that know best alone and let them do their jobs. Kind of like firetruck placement K. Conrad. You may think you know, but I think it has been shown that politicians should leave job related decisions to the professionals.

All Wharton has to do is go down to 201 Poplar. Based on the number of MPD officers arrested in the last 6 months, the thugs down at 201 should have sufficient qualifications to join the force.

Hopefully under this new mayor the most qualified will be given job offers. Bring back the old standards(no convictions no pooe driving history and more education) that made former recruits want to be an MPD officer. Get the training academy back to training and not passing everyone through the system. When the recruit fails an exam or firearms they need to go find another job - maybe flipping burgers
