MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - During his State of the City address, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton told the crowd at Southwest Tennessee Community College, "sometimes we get a little too down in the dumps because we haven't seen what other cities are facing."

Speaking on crime, poverty and education, Wharton said, "Cities everywhere are facing the same challenges we are facing."

Although, it's tough to imagine any city that has faced the kinds of problems Memphis has in trying to find someone to lead its animal shelter. Wharton told abc24.com, "What we need now is someone that knows how to and is willing to manage people, places, and processes."

Wharton said people shouldn't be surprised that it's been so hard to find a director, "particularly in light of the bad name Memphis has gotten and relentless attacks folks that come in will have to expect."

Wharton admits the person chosen to lead the Memphis Animal Shelter may not have experience in animal services. In that case, he said you get someone who's a good manager and you "back them up with the technical expertise. You don't have to have someone who's an experienced animal shelter director."

Wharton plans on announcing a new director in the next 30 days.

'In that case, he said you get someone who's a good manager and you "back them up with the technical expertise. You don't have to have someone who's an experienced animal shelter director." ' Sounds like we couldn't get anyone in there who is experienced, doesn't it? And where, pray tell, is this "technical expertise" going to come from? From the workers who think it's fine to hose down dogs in their cages, who can't tell a feral cat from a frightened cat, who didn't realize in 2009 that dogs needed food or water? The same workers who today leave puppies in filth without food or water? Who don't use the Chameleon system to post animals online? Who apparently have no experience in humane animal handling and routinely drag dogs around on chokepoles? I've got an idea - how about we hire someone competent and let them get rid of the staff that is not performing/conducting illegal activities/abusing animals? How about we hire someone who makes lifesaving a priority? Memphis is so stuck in the 1970 model of catch and kill sheltering, it's embarrassing.

A team made up of those who have in the past been critics of the shelter should be the obvious choice to run the Memphis Animal Services..Lets see what they can do and give them the same support and backing as you did the previous administrator, who had to leave because of threats to himself and his family.

Mayor Wharton better hire an experienced director who loves animals, and fire anybody there who doesn't. If you keep the sames people you will have the same problems, and those animals don't deserve that!!!
